How to use

  1. Download NokiaNBUExtractor.exe using the button above
  2. Double-click to open — if Windows shows a SmartScreen warning, click More info → Run anyway
  3. Click Browse… next to Backup files and select your .nbu file(s)
  4. Choose an output folder
  5. Tick what you want to extract and click Extract

About Nokia .nbu files

Nokia PC Suite and Nokia Suite (now discontinued) created .nbu backup files when you connected your Nokia phone to a Windows PC. These files contain your entire phone backup — photos, contacts, messages, calendar, and more — stored in a proprietary binary format.

Note for S40 phones (C-series, basic Nokias): Camera photos are usually stored on the memory card, not in the backup. If you don't find photos in the .nbu file, check your old memory card.

Is this really free?

Yes. No cost, no sign-up, no ads. The source code is on GitHub under the MIT licence.

Does it send my data anywhere?

No. Everything runs locally on your computer. No internet connection is needed once downloaded.

Why does Windows warn me about the file?

Because the .exe is not signed with a paid code-signing certificate. This is a false positive — click More info → Run anyway. You can also run directly from the Python source if you prefer to verify the code yourself.

Which Nokia phones does this work for?

Any Nokia phone that was backed up using Nokia PC Suite or Nokia Suite — typically Symbian phones (E-series, N-series) and S40 phones from the 2000s and early 2010s.

Can I open a .nbu file on Mac or Linux?

The .exe is Windows-only. On Mac or Linux, you can run the Python source directly: python nbu_extractor_gui.py (requires Python 3.8+, no other dependencies).
